Snowflakes

Corazon de Melon kids kicked off February by learning about snowflakes. Kiddos enjoyed being read a book about how snowflakes are formed and their anatomy. Then, students sat down to craft paper snowflakes of their own to take home. Afterward, they took an up close look at snow using a magnifying glass. They were given the chance to use a microscope to look at snowflakes and other prepared slides. Later, the kids enjoyed playtime with each other and parents.

Lights and Electricity

Students learned about electricity during our last meetup of 2025. We also celebrated the holidays with a cookie exchange. Our group of learners decorated a Christmas tree together, then Miss Edith taught them the different ways electricity is created. Students then conducted a few experiments to see static and current electricity in action! Afterward, we exchanged cookies and had playtime before breaking for the holidays.

Piping Plovers

Students learned about the Piping Plovers, Monty and Rose, that nested on Chicago's Montrose Beach at our December 12th meetup. Students worked together to collect eggs hidden around the library. Each egg contained a puzzle piece, which the kids worked as a team to put together. Miss Diana read a book about Monty and Rose and then led in a bird feeder building activity, which students got to bring home.

Too Many Tamales

Our group kicked off December with a holiday themed story time, featuring the book Too Many Tamales by Gary Soto. Afterward, we had a short discussion about the story and made our own play dough tamales!

Fall at Corazon de Melon

The 2025-2026 school year has begun for Corazon de Melon. Our first meet up was in October and served as a meet and greet as we welcomed a new family to our group. This fall our children have learned about amphibians, gardening (including a fieldtrip to Semillas de Justicia Garden), tree life cycles, how leaves change color in the fall, and where corn came from. We have more fun things planned for the upcoming winter. Feel free to contact us if you would like to join in!
